More on the Artists:
Nick Turner is an accomplished singer, songwriter and guitarist who was a founding member of Sons of Trout in the late ’90s, and later one half of Mikanic with fellow Trout member Mike Rennie. His songs are lyrically powerful, relevant, humorous and energetic, and his performances are marked by wide appeal and virtuosic musicianship.
In 2004, Nick moved to New York City with Mikanic, where he collaborated with some of the best in the business, most notably Bakithi Kumalo and Tony Cedras (of Paul Simon fame), Zolani Mahola (Freshlyground) and Nathi Gcabashe (Hugh Masekela Band). Mikanic played and sold out many of New York City’s legendary venues, including Lincoln Center, CBGB’s, Joe’s Pub, The Knitting Factory and Symphony Space.
In 2009, Nick returned to Cape Town to embark on a solo career. Since then, he has graced the stages of many of South Africa’s most prestigious festivals, including the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Rocking the Daisies and KKNK. In 2018, he joined the Hanepoot Brass Band, performing indigenous South African music alongside works by leading local jazz composers; the band has since released their debut album, Tokelaan. During lockdown, Nick started the band The Misty Cliffs, recording their debut album, which went on to receive a SAMA nomination for Best Adult Contemporary Album.
On bass, Schalk Joubert is one of South Africa’s most celebrated bassists, with a career spanning almost 25 years, numerous performance and production awards, and credits alongside the likes of David Kramer, Hugh Masekela and Anton Goosen.
On guitar, Jonny Blundell is a Berklee-trained, veteran session guitarist who’s played in bands including Fat City and the Roger Lucey Band, had songs on the 5FM Top 20, and opened for the likes of Crosby, Stills & Nash.
