He studied jazz guitar at the University of Cape Town (UCT), where he is now a lecturer. He later completed a Master’s Degree in Contemporary Music Performance and Production at Berklee College of Music in Valencia. He has studied jazz guitar in New York City, and performed in cities across the US, UK, Shanghai, and South Africa.
Bester was a member of the iconic pop-jazz group Mango Groove from 2009 to 2015 and has served as a session guitarist for major festivals and television shows, including ‘The Voice SA’, ‘Noot vir Noot’, ‘Idols SA’, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, and ‘Clash of the Choirs’.
Notable performances include the Standard Bank Jazz Festival in Makhanda (2018-2020), the RMB Starlight Classics in Cape Town (2020-2026).
As a composer, he released his debut solo album Now, Not Yet in 2019, which explores a fusion of jazz, rock, folk, and world music. His collaborations include work with South African artists such as Lira, Loyiso Bala., Hugh Masekela, Zolani Mahola, Dan Shout, Nomfundo Xaluva, Schalk Joubert and Buddy Wells.
Awards include the 2013 SAFTA (South African Film and Television Award) for Best Film Soundtrack (Semi-Soet) and the 2008 SAMRO Overseas Scholarship for Instrumentalists.
