More on The Artists:
Carla
This year Carla Conrad packed up Cape Town and moved to Saxony, Germany. What followed was a full German summer of stages, the Wohnzimmer Stage at Homeward Festival, the Newcomer Stage at Sommer in der Stadt in Amberg, and then a headline album launch at the Gewandhaus Dresden on 1 October, an exclusive cinematic acoustic concert presented by the hotel to mark the release.
On 27 November she brings that record home. Alma Café is where the album tour closes, back in the city where these songs were written, and she will be joined by guitarist Rob Watt, who also lent his magic to a few songs on the album.
Produced by Daniel Baron and supported by a 2025 SAMRO Music Fund grant, the album grew out of singles including Beast, Feast and What Are We Afraid Of, which hit number one on IFM South Africa and has been played in more than nine countries.
Live, it is voice and acoustic guitar, stripped back to the indie rock grit, alt-pop shimmer and folk storytelling underneath. A rockandroller mixed with intriguing fragility, as Matt Mercer put it.
Emma-Jean
Emma-Jean is an indie folk singer-songwriter / guitarist from the ‘deep south’ of Cape Town. Passionate about songwriting from a young age, she quickly formed the habit of turning her life experiences into song. She has been recognised for her soulful songwriting, making the finalists of Barleycorn’s Annual Songwriter’s Competition multiple times.
Emma-Jean’s writing often draws from indie folk/rock roots. Although her music is not strictly pop her songwriting incorporates a “pop sensibility”. Her performances are powerful and engaging – inviting intimacy and reflection.
Knowing the influence of music in her own life and having witnessed it’s ability to connect, heal and create community – for the last couple of years Emma-Jean has been pursuing her Masters in Music Therapy at the University of Pretoria.
In August 2019, the ‘deep south’ musician won the competition “Cape Town Unwired”, as part of the solo artists category.
In March 2020, Emma-Jean released her first single “From the South”, which can be found on various streaming platforms.
